
Richard G F Chance
Founding Director of Altor Africa (Pty) Ltd.
Richard’s extensive work in sustainability throughout his career has equipped him with the knowledge and experience needed for the work undertaken by Altor Africa.
Richard is a qualified attorney, specialising in labour law and industrial relations as a partner at Shepstone & Wylie in Durban.
He spent over 20 years at SAB Ltd, initially heading up the Industrial Relations function. He acquired line management experience as General Manager of the Central Region of SAB, responsible for production, sales and distribution. His final position at SAB was Head: Public Policy, which included a number of functions, such as Regulatory Affairs, Government and Stakeholder Management, Reputation Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and the Legal department.
Richard was SAB’s alternate representative to Business Leadership South Africa and represented South African business at the International Competition Network conference in Mexico on the basis of SAB’s competition compliance programme which he established.
He has consulted to Sasol on world class reputation management and to its mining division regarding appropriate responses to regulatory reform and the social and political issues underpinning them.
Richard prepared a Sustainability strategy for Debswana in Botswana, which included the identification of key issues, establishing mechanisms to address them, and the appropriate management and Board governance structures. This also involved addressing key enablers, such as corporate culture and the requirements of a high performing organisation.
Richard is accredited to international standards by the London School of Mediation, and has been appointed to the General Commercial Panel of the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa.
Richard is a Non-Executive Director of Crookes Brothers Limited, which specialises in the production of agricultural products, including sugar cane, bananas and deciduous fruit in South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia, with a major new macadamia nut farming operation under development in Mozambique.
